Conquer Your Fears and Embrace the Thrill

For those who crave adventure and seek a thrilling experience that pushes them beyond their comfort zone, Austria holds a hidden gem that promises an unforgettable journey: the
Stairway to Heaven in the Dachstein Mountains. This isn't your average scenic overlook; it's a suspended bridge that demands courage and rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views and an unmatched sense of accomplishment. So, ready to dive in or should I say climb to the heavens of an awesome adventure?

Forget the mundane; the Stairway to Heaven is an invitation to embrace the extraordinary. It's a chance to challenge yourself, to confront your fears, and to witness the majestic beauty of the Austrian Alps from a perspective unlike any other.

A Bridge to the Sky:

Located on the Dachstein Glacier, the Stairway to Heaven is part of a complex of attractions that includes the Dachstein Ice Palace, the Sky Walk viewing platform, and the Dachstein Suspension Bridge. While each of these offers a unique perspective, the Stairway to Heaven stands out as the most thrilling.

This remarkable structure is not for the faint of heart. It's a narrow staircase suspended high above the glacier, offering a dizzying yet exhilarating descent (or ascent, depending on your perspective). The grated metal steps allow for a clear view of the vast expanse below, amplifying the feeling of being suspended in mid-air.

Why Take the Plunge? The Allure of Adventure:

The Stairway to Heaven isn't just about the stunning visuals; it's about the personal experience. It’s about the adrenaline rush, the surge of accomplishment, and the profound connection to nature that comes from conquering a perceived challenge.

Here's why you should consider adding this thrilling adventure to your bucket list: Unparalleled Views: The Dachstein Mountains are renowned for their stunning beauty, and the Stairway to Heaven provides an unparalleled vantage point. Witness the sprawling glaciers, jagged peaks, and verdant valleys stretching as far as the eye can see. It's a visual feast that will leave you speechless.
Conquer Your Fears: Fear of heights is a common human experience. This staircase offers a safe, controlled environment to confront that fear head-on. Each step taken is a small victory, building confidence and proving that you are capable of overcoming perceived limitations.
A Sense of Accomplishment: Reaching the bottom (or the top!) of the Stairway to Heaven is a significant achievement. It's a testament to your courage and determination. This sense of accomplishment can be incredibly empowering, spilling over into other aspects of your life.

A Unique Photo Opportunity: Capture the moment with stunning photos and videos. The dramatic backdrop of the Alps combined with the unique perspective from the staircase will result in memorable visuals that you'll cherish for years to come.
Part of a Larger Experience: The Stairway to Heaven is just one component of the Dachstein Glacier experience. Explore the Ice Palace, walk across the suspension bridge, and soak in the views from the Sky Walk. Make a day of it and immerse yourself in the wonder of the Austrian Alps.

Preparing for Your Ascent (or Descent):

Before embarking on this thrilling adventure, keep these tips in mind:Check the Weather: Mountain weather can be unpredictable. Check the forecast before you go and dress appropriately in layers.
Wear Sturdy Shoes: Comfortable, supportive shoes are essential for navigating the staircase and exploring the other attractions.
Take Your Time: There's no need to rush. Take your time, breathe deeply, and savor the experience.
Hold On: The handrails are there for a reason! Use them for added stability, especially if

you're feeling apprehensive.
Bring Your Camera: Capture the stunning views and your personal triumph.
Embrace the Moment: Let go of your fears and fully immerse yourself in the adventure.

More Than Just a Tourist Attraction:

The Stairway to Heaven is more than just a tourist attraction; it's an opportunity for personal growth and transformation. It's a chance to push your boundaries, conquer your fears, and witness the raw beauty of the natural world.

Top Ten Funniest New Year's Celebrations and Traditions (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Absurdity of Midnight)

Let’s be honest, folks. New Year’s Eve. That glittering, champagne-soaked, slightly-nauseous culmination of another year hurtling past at the speed of a caffeinated tortoise. We all participate in the ritual, whether we’re glued to the TV watching the ball drop in Times Square (a giant, sparkly onion, if you ask me) or huddled around a lukewarm bowl of punch with our increasingly bewildered relatives. But some cultures take the whole "new beginnings" thing a little more… enthusiastically. A lot more enthusiastically, actually. And that’s where the real fun begins.

So, grab your party hats (the funnier, the better – I’m partial to the ones with flashing lights and questionable taste), because I’m about to regale you with my top ten funniest New Year’s celebrations and traditions from around the globe. Prepare for a giggle-fest of epic proportions.

1. The "Burning of the Old Year" (Various Cultures): Look, I get it. Symbolically incinerating everything bad from the past is tempting. But have you seen some of these effigies? We’re talking anything

from a simple scarecrow to elaborate representations of the year’s biggest disappointments (a giant, burning likeness of your ex, perhaps?). The sheer creativity—and slightly concerning pyrotechnics—makes this tradition a comedic goldmine. Just remember to keep a safe distance. And maybe avoid using your mother-in-law's likeness.

2. Throwing Furniture Out the Window (South Africa): I’m not kidding. In some parts of South Africa, tossing old furniture out the window is a popular way to usher in the New Year. Imagine the

chaos! The sheer logistics! The potential for insurance claims! I can practically hear the sound of shattering glass and exasperated sighs
from the city council. It's a chaotic symphony of good riddance, with a potential for extremely expensive cleanup. I’d recommend investing in some sturdy (and easily replaceable) furniture, just in case.

3. Eating Twelve Grapes at Midnight (Spain): This one sounds

simple, right? Wrong. Try cramming twelve grapes into your mouth while simultaneously shouting “Feliz Año Nuevo!” The resulting face contortions are priceless. It's a race against time, a test of dexterity, and a potential choking hazard all rolled into one glorious, grape-based spectacle. I've personally witnessed enough near-suffocation incidents to write a whole opera about it.

4. The Noise-Making Extravaganza (Worldwide): From firecrackers to car horns to banging pots and pans, the global obsession with making as much noise as humanly possible at midnight is, frankly,

hilarious. Imagine the collective ringing in the ears the next morning. It's a testament to our species' dedication to both celebrating and slightly self-harming. Bonus points for creative noise-making instruments. Who needs a traditional party horn when you can use a tuba filled with packing peanuts?

5. Wearing Red Underwear (Several Latin American Countries): This

one is less about laughter and more about a slightly awkward feeling of being perpetually judged by your undergarments. The idea is that wearing red underwear brings good luck. But let's be real, if bad luck is avoided purely by the color of your underwear, I think we’ve got bigger problems than just bad luck.

6. Jumping Over Waves (Brazil): This sounds refreshing, right? Until

you realize this usually involves a rather chilly ocean and a significant amount of potentially embarrassing tumbles. I admire the commitment to ritualistic sea-bathing, but personally, I'd rather stick to a hot shower.

7. Dropping a Puppet (Ecuador): These aren't your average sock puppets, either. We're talking about a full-sized, often grotesque effigy representing the previous year. The symbolic destruction is quite entertaining, but please, someone contact the puppet’s union about fair compensation for such dangerous work conditions.

8. The Mari Lwyd (Wales): This horse-skull-headed figure, sung

around by revelers, is unique, to say the least. The combination of a rather spooky creature and festive singing is... well, it's something. Let's just say it's a tradition that leaves a lasting impression (and maybe a slightly uneasy feeling lurking in the back of your mind).

9. First-Footing (Scotland): The tradition of the first person to enter your home on New Year's Day bringing good luck or bad luck based on their characteristics is a fascinating mix of superstition and societal awkwardness. It's quite possibly the source of many impromptu awkward first dates.

10. The Polar Bear Plunge (Various Locations): Let's be honest.

Jumping into freezing cold water in the name of celebration requires a specific type of bravery (or madness). The sheer, unadulterated joy (or screaming) of those emerging from the icy depths is simply unforgettable. And the post-plunge shivering? That’s comedic gold.

So there you have it: my top ten funniest New Year’s celebrations. Remember, the humor lies not only in the traditions themselves but also in the sheer human determination to celebrate – often hilariously – the passing of another year. Happy New Year, everyone! May your celebrations be filled with laughter, good fortune, and maybe a slightly less terrifying selection of effigies.

Roller Coaster Skating

So, who wants to go next?

Last month I wrote an article about a guy who built a suit with roller blades that allowed him to skate while laying down at about 80mph on a long winding road only inches off the ground which is very awesome. Now here is something just as awesome and even more dangerous.

Now days everyone is looking for the ultimate roller coaster ride, we’ve built giant steel coasters and there are even some giant wooden roller coaster. We look for the biggest drops, loops and rolls and with steel coasters that is what they have given us and the wooden one give us big drops and tight turn and lots of speed. So with all that you would think we’ve done it all ………….. NOPE !!!

Well there is a guy who was not happy with just dips, rolls and loops, so what did he do? He put on a pair of roller skates and skated down a Roller coaster for a half mile at speeds over 60 mph and reaching 3G’s, meet Dirk Auerv. OK maybe these were special built skates and you can’t find them in any Walmart or Target store. But even if you could find a pair, where would you use them just look at them they are huge and most likely weigh about 6 to 10 pounds each.

So how did he do it? Well the first thing he did was to spend over 110 hours designing and building a special pair of skates that would run on a wooden roller coaster. Each skate has about 16 wheels which are designed to hold the skate onto the wooden tracks.

It is a fair bet that this won’t be found in any amusement park, but it’s so cool. So as with anything extreme like this there are bound to be risks, so what risks did Mr. Auerv face? Well from what I read the biggest problem would come from nails. Because the roller coaster was wooden the chance of a nail not being flush was a real possibility along with track not being even. All of these could be enough to stop a wheel and send him crashing into the track. The other thing that could be a problem is the G Forces he would have to deal with, this would be one problem he would not have any control over and could force him into a crash that could seriously hurt him or worse yet kill him.

So, did he make it??? Well watch the video below and see for yourself. One thing is for sure this guy is living Life’s greatest Adventures.

Watch Out Flash, There's a New Super Hero on the Scene (Sort of)!

The Flash, Superman, Spider-Man – we've all got our favorite superheroes. But what if I told you there's a new contender for the title of "fastest man alive," and they're not from a comic book? Forget capes and lasers, this hero is all about hard plastic, rollerblades, and a serious need for speed.

I stumbled upon this incredible feat of human ingenuity while searching for new and extreme sports. Apparently, a daredevil in Europe has created a hard plastic suit with rollerblades attached, allowing him to "fly" down roads at incredibly high speeds, just
inches from the ground. Reports suggest he's reached speeds of up to 80 mph, passing cars and trucks like they're standing still. The videos are mind-blowing!

My initial reaction, like many, was: "How do you stop?" One video showcased a technique that skiers would recognize as "snow plowing." While it doesn't look overly complicated, it's clear that you need a decent amount of space to slow down, especially at those kinds of speeds.

This is the ultimate combination of skateboarding, rollerblading, and street luge. Imagine the rush of being that close to the ground, propelled forward at such an incredible pace. It must be one of the most exhilarating feelings imaginable.

Frankly, it's mind-bogglingly extreme. This is undoubtedly one of the most amazing things I've come across in the realm of action sports. It's so incredibly cool that it's instantly shot to the top of my "things to try" list (though maybe I'll start with something a little less intense first!).

If you're looking for an adrenaline rush like no other, keep an eye out for this incredible new sport. The future of extreme sports may just be zooming past you at 80 mph, and it's definitely one to watch!

Well, here is a hotel for those who have no fear of heights or are looking for a new "High Adventure" This is the "Skylodge Hotel", it's about 400 feet off the valley floor.
This hotel is in Peru in the area called "Sacred Valley" known for some great views. It's run by the Peruvian tour company "Natura Viva".

So how much do you pay for this adventure? Well, here is what the article I read said.

"The price you’ll have to pay to stay in one of these incredibly unique capsules, is having to climb a 400-foot steel ladder embedded in the almost sheer-cliff face to get to one of these unique hotels. If you don’t fancy that, you can also hike or use a zip-wire. Oh, and the other price you’ll have to pay is approximately $300 USD".

Your beautiful walk ... OK climb to your front door

So what’s the rooms like? everything I've read says it has lots of windows with great views, there is a nice sleeping area, an eating area and a bathroom. All rooms have drapes for privacy. and yes there are lights.

This is your front door.

This is your Bedroom. Looks comfortable to me.

This is your dinning area

Here is your deck, where you can relax, play games or what ever you want, make sure you are strapped in, its a long ways down.

After all the fun and food and drink, you may find nature calling, well here is your bathroom. It is fully self contained so need to worry about who is below.

At the end of your trip from what I have read there are only two ways to get down. You can repeal down, which if your a mountain climber could be a lot of fun, or you can use a zip-line which is what I would love to do.

Texas Fall

It's Not Colorado, But It's Still Got That Magic

As the sweltering days of summer fade away (Unless you live in Texas) and a crispness fills the air, we are ushered into the enchanting season of fall. With each passing day, nature transforms itself into a breathtaking tapestry of vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows, as leaves cascade from trees in a brilliant display of color. This stunning metamorphosis is just one of the many reasons why fall holds a special place in our hearts. It’s not just about the scenic beauty; it’s also a time for reconnecting with comforting traditions, indulging in seasonal flavors, and savoring delightful treats like warm apple cider and pumpkin-flavored goodies. From cozy sweaters to crisp evenings by the fire, fall embodies a sense of warmth and nostalgia, making it truly the best time of the year. Join me as we embrace the joys of this magical season and explore all the reasons that make fall a time worth celebrating.

Now, I'm not going to lie, there's something about the crisp Colorado air, the brilliant reds and golds painting the mountainsides, that just screams "fall." But here in Texas, fall is a little different. We might not have the dramatic foliage displays or the snow-capped peaks, but trust me, we've got our own unique charm.

For starters, the "cool" air we experience here is more like a welcome reprieve from the summer heat. Instead of bundling up in layers, we can finally enjoy the outdoors without sweating through our clothes. And let's be honest, there's something special about the feeling of a crisp autumn breeze on your skin after months of relentless sunshine.

Fall in Texas is also all about cozy nights by the fire. Whether it's a crackling bonfire with friends or a warm fireplace with loved ones, those evenings are all about connection, laughter, and good conversation. And what better way to enjoy those evenings than with the smell of grilling food and the sweet scent of apple cider filling the air?

Speaking of food, fall in Texas is a culinary delight. From pumpkin spice lattes and apple cider donuts to hearty chili and steaming bowls of creamy butternut squash soup, there's something for everyone to enjoy. And don't forget the local farm-to-table bounty! Fall is the perfect time to indulge in fresh, seasonal produce like crisp apples, juicy pears, and plump pomegranates.

Sure, we might not have the iconic fall colors of Colorado, but our Texas sunsets are pretty darn spectacular! The sky transforms into a canvas of fiery hues as the sun dips below the horizon, creating breathtaking views that are truly unforgettable.

So, while Texas fall might not be a carbon copy of its Colorado counterpart, it's still a time to appreciate the simple joys of the season. The cool air, cozy nights, delicious food, and breathtaking sunsets all come together to create a unique and cherished experience. It's a reminder that no matter where you are, fall has its own magic and beauty, waiting to be discovered.

My Favorite Place: Bergen, Norway

A Beautiful Escape Above the Arctic Circle

When people ask about my favorite place that I've ever visited, my mind immediately races back to one extraordinary stop I made while serving in the Air Force. It was a fleeting moment in time, yet the memories remain vivid, like a vibrant painting frozen in the frame of my mind. That place is Bergen, Norway, nestled just above the Arctic Circle. If you ever find yourself seeking a breathtaking experience, Bergen might just be the perfect destination.

A Glimpse into Bergen's Beauty

Arriving in Bergen was like stepping into a postcard. With its quaint wooden houses painted in a spectrum of warm colors, the city immediately reminded me of the charming fishing villages I had known in New England. The air was crisp and clean, infused with the scent of the sea and the soft whispers of the wind. It was as if Bergen held a secret - a mix of nature's grandeur and undeniable tranquility.

As I wandered through the narrow streets lined with rustic buildings, I was captivated by the picturesque harbor, where boats bobbed gently with the rhythm of the waves. The iconic Bryggen Wharf, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stood proudly with its medieval Hanseatic buildings. It was astonishing to think about the long history encapsulated within those timbered structures, echoing stories from the 14th century.

Nature at Its Finest

What struck me most about Bergen was the stunning backdrop of towering mountains and sprawling fjords. During my stay, I took a cable car ride up to Mount Fløyen, where the panoramic views left me breathless. The sight of the city nestled between the mountains and the sea was one that I will carry with me forever. The vibrant green hills and the deep blue waters formed a visual symphony that seemed almost surreal.

With the sun setting over the fjords, casting a golden hue on the horizon, I found a moment of solitude that reminded me of the simple joys of life. It was a pristine moment where time stood still, and all worries melted away. In that serene atmosphere, I understood why so many people refer to Norway as the Land of the Midnight Sun. The magic of that experience is something I feel fortunate to have witnessed.

Culture and Connection

Bergen is not just a feast for the eyes; it also offers a rich tapestry of culture. I had the opportunity to explore local markets, sample traditional dishes, and interact with some of the warmest people I’ve ever met. The lively fish market buzzed with energy, offering a delightful array of fresh seafood, local crafts, and regional delicacies. I found myself indulging in the local cuisine, savoring flavors that were both unique and comforting.

Through conversations with local residents, I learned about Norway's deep connection to the sea, its history as a fierce trading hub, and the resilience of its people. Their stories added a layer of depth to my visit, reminding me that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about forging connections and understanding different cultures.

A Lasting Impression

While my time in Bergen was relatively brief, it had a profound impact on me. The combination of natural beauty, rich history, and welcoming culture created a melting pot of experiences that I will cherish for a lifetime. It serves as a reminder that there are places in the world that transcend ordinary beauty, wrapping you in a sense of wonder that lingers long after you leave.

In the end, Bergen isn’t just a favorite destination for me; it’s a cherished memory that I hold close to my heart. If you ever find yourself journeying through Norway, I encourage you to explore Bergen. Let its charm envelop you, just as it did for me, and discover the magic that lingers above the Arctic Circle. Whether you’re drawn to its stunning landscapes or its warm-hearted people, I promise, Bergen will not disappoint you.
